Filming at Llancaiach Fawr

Llancaiach Fawr Manor House is a Grade 1 listed, award-winning living history museum set in the Civil War years.

Using high-quality historical building restoration techniques and authentic period decoration and furnishings, Llancaiach Fawr endeavours to make the past seem like the present. The house has been restored to the appearance it had in 1645, during the time of it’s ownership by the Prichard family, aspiring minor gentry who came to prominence during the later half of the Civil War. Historic interpreters role-play the servants of the household in 1645, and greet daytime visitors.

We have working period kitchens with practical fireplaces, a formal 17th century Great Hall with adjacent principal rooms with finely preserved wooden panelling from 1628, fully furnished bedrooms, and accessible attics with authentically furnished servant’s quarters. Authentic and period-sympathetic lighting has recently been installed. There are period formal gardens surrounding the house, and historically accurate kitchen gardens and a small orchard. The house is set in an historical ‘bubble’- it is possible to create exterior views without seeing the modern world.

Modern heating and electrical facilities have been carefully built into the house. Power sockets are available in every room, and the lighting can be adjusted to your needs.

Llancaiach has generally been used as a location for Tudor and Stuart period drama productions, but has been dressed and furnished for medieval periods, and has even become a 19th century coaching inn, a 16th century Venetian apartment, and a 2nd World War French Chateau.

Our professional living history interpretation staff have a fount of historical knowledge about the house and its surroundings- ask how we can make their knowledge and our collections a part of your documentary or article piece. They are also experienced presenters and trained performers to camera.

From site visit, administration and pre-planning through to managing your filming day, the Museum has dedicated staff to help you. The site has more than adequate space for production unit bases and vehicle parking, and catering facilities for crews.

Hours of Filming

Due to our public opening hours the Manor will only normally be available for filming from 7am-10am and 5pm-10pm Tuesday-Sunday.

However, special arrangements for sole access for filming in the Manor can be made. We can also arrange to open for filming on Mondays when we are closed to the public. We are prepared to close to the site to the public for filming but this option incurs additional negotiated costs if the Visitor Centre has to be closed as well.

Friday and Saturday evenings between October and the end of March are not normally available unless arrangements are made with at least three months notice due to programmed events during the winter.

Should a block of filming be required, as much notice as possible enables us to reserve dates for you and arrange group bookings around filming commitments.

Please Note:

All charges are subject to VAT at the standard rate current at the time of booking
Extra charges may be incurred for the moving of furniture as some pieces require special care as they are 16^th/17^th century pieces.
Additional facilities for hire may be available: green rooms, prop storage, wardrobe and make up in our education centre.
These fees are valid for the calendar year.
Contracts and proof of insurance will be required to protect the grade 1 listed building and its contents.
The General Manager of Llancaiach Fawr, on behalf of Caerphilly County Borough Council, reserves the right to refuse filming access to any applicant where the content of the filming is considered to be incompatible with the purpose of the site
